Tubeless Setup

Tubeless Setup — $25

Tubeless tires are the single biggest upgrade you can make for flat protection and ride quality. Instead of running an inner tube inside the tire, a tubeless setup seals the tire directly to the rim with airtight tape and liquid sealant. Small punctures — glass, thorns, staples — seal themselves instantly as the sealant plugs the hole from the inside. Pinch flats are eliminated entirely because there’s no tube to pinch. And you can run lower tire pressure for better grip and comfort without the risk of snakebite flats. A tubeless setup at Bell Lap Cycleworks is $25 per wheel, and it’s one of the best investments in ride quality and reliability we can offer.

This service covers the conversion from tubed to tubeless, or a refresh of an existing tubeless setup. We install tubeless tape, tubeless valve stems, mount the tire, seat the bead with a compressor, and add sealant. If your wheels and tires are already tubeless-compatible (look for “TLR,” “TLE,” “UST,” or “Tubeless Ready” markings), we can have you rolling tubeless in under an hour.

What’s Included

A proper tubeless setup isn’t just squirting sealant into a tire. Every step matters for a reliable, leak-free seal:

  • Compatibility check: First, we verify that your rim and tire are both tubeless-compatible. Not every wheel and tire combination can go tubeless — the rim needs a specific bead hook profile (or hookless design rated for tubeless), and the tire casing needs to be airtight enough to hold pressure with sealant. We’ll be straight with you if your setup isn’t a good candidate.
  • Rim preparation: We remove the existing tire, tube, and any old rim tape. The rim bed gets cleaned thoroughly — any residue from old tape, dried sealant, or adhesive will prevent the new tape from sealing. On rims that have been running tubes, this step takes extra attention because the rim bed may have grit embedded in the surface.
  • Tubeless tape application: We apply tubeless-specific tape to the rim bed, covering all spoke holes completely. The tape width is matched to your rim’s internal width — too narrow and it won’t cover the spoke holes at the edges; too wide and it bunches up in the bead channel and prevents proper tire seating. We wrap the tape with consistent tension and overlap the starting point by at least 4-6 inches to ensure a continuous seal.
  • Valve stem installation: Tubeless valve stems pass through a hole in the rim tape and seal with a rubber grommet against the rim. We use quality valves with removable cores — removable cores let you add sealant through the valve later without breaking the tire bead. The valve gets tightened firmly but not over-torqued, which can deform the rubber seal.
  • Tire mounting: The tire goes onto the rim with the bead seated into the rim’s bead shelf on both sides. Some tire and rim combinations mount easily by hand; others are extremely tight and require careful technique to avoid damaging the tape or tire bead. We never use sharp metal tire levers on tubeless setups — they can nick the tape and create leak points.
  • Bead seating with compressor: We use a high-volume air compressor (or a tubeless-specific inflator tank) to deliver a burst of air that pushes both tire beads into the rim’s bead hooks simultaneously. This is the step where the tire “pops” into place — you can hear each bead snap into the hook. A floor pump often can’t deliver air fast enough for this step, which is why many home tubeless attempts fail.
  • Sealant addition: Once the bead is seated, we remove the valve core and inject the correct amount of tubeless sealant through the valve stem. The amount depends on tire volume — a 700x28c road tire needs about 30-40ml; a 29×2.3 mountain tire needs 60-90ml. Too little sealant and it won’t cover punctures effectively; too much adds unnecessary weight.
  • Seal verification: We inflate to the correct pressure, spin the wheel to distribute sealant, and check every inch of the bead line for air leaks. Any seeping spots get worked by rotating the wheel to let sealant coat the inside of that section. We don’t let a wheel leave until it’s holding air with zero leaks.

Benefits of Going Tubeless

Tubeless isn’t just a trend — there are real mechanical advantages that make riding better:

  • Self-sealing punctures: The liquid sealant inside the tire plugs small holes as they happen — often before you even notice. Glass shards, thorns, and small wire punctures that would flat a tube in seconds get sealed in a revolution or two. This is the number one reason riders go tubeless, and it works. We’ve seen tires with dozens of sealed punctures still holding air perfectly.
  • No pinch flats: Pinch flats (snakebites) happen when a tube gets squeezed between the tire and rim on a hard impact. With no tube, pinch flats are physically impossible. This means you can ride through potholes, over roots, and off curbs without the anxiety of flatting from the impact itself.
  • Lower pressure, better ride: Without the pinch flat risk, you can run 10-20% lower tire pressure. Lower pressure means more tire contact with the road, which translates to better grip in corners, better traction on gravel and dirt, and a smoother ride over rough surfaces. For gravel and mountain biking, this pressure advantage is transformative.
  • Lower rolling resistance: Counterintuitively, tubeless tires at the same pressure as tubed tires have measurably lower rolling resistance. The reason: a tube creates friction against the inside of the tire casing as the tire deforms over bumps. Eliminate the tube, eliminate that friction. Independent testing consistently shows 2-5 watts saved per tire at the same pressure — small but real over a long ride.
  • Weight savings (marginal): Removing the tube saves 80-120 grams per wheel. The sealant adds back 30-60 grams, so the net savings are modest — 20-90 grams per wheel depending on the setup. The weight savings aren’t the main reason to go tubeless, but it’s a nice bonus, especially since it’s rotating weight at the rim.

Tubeless Maintenance

Tubeless isn’t set-and-forget. The sealant is a consumable that needs periodic attention:

  • Sealant refresh every 2-4 months: Tubeless sealant is a latex-based liquid that dries out over time, especially in hot weather. In a Raleigh summer with temperatures regularly hitting the 90s, sealant can dry out in as little as 6-8 weeks. When the sealant dries, you lose the self-sealing ability and the tire can slowly lose air. We recommend checking and topping off sealant every 2-3 months in summer and every 3-4 months in cooler weather.
  • Dried sealant cleanup: When you eventually remove a tubeless tire (for a new tire, fresh tape, or a puncture too large for sealant), you’ll find dried latex residue — sometimes called “sealant boogers” — clinging to the inside of the tire and rim. This needs to be cleaned out before re-installing. It peels off most surfaces fairly easily, but neglecting it leads to buildup that can affect tire seating.
  • Valve core cleaning: Sealant can clog the valve core over time, making inflation difficult. If your floor pump struggles to push air through the valve, the core probably has dried sealant in it. We clean or replace valve cores as part of any tubeless refresh.
  • Carry a spare tube anyway: Tubeless sealant handles small punctures automatically. But a large gash, a sidewall cut, or a bead unseating from a hard impact can defeat the sealant. For these situations, you can still install a regular tube inside a tubeless tire as an emergency roadside fix. Carry a tube, a tire lever, and a mini pump — tubeless doesn’t make you invincible, just much more flat-resistant.

When Tubeless Isn’t the Right Call

We’re fans of tubeless, but we’ll be honest about when it doesn’t make sense:

  • Non-compatible rims or tires: If your rim or tire isn’t designed for tubeless, don’t force it. “Ghetto tubeless” setups using split tubes as rim strips and non-tubeless tires are unreliable and can blow off the rim at pressure. We only set up tubeless with properly rated components.
  • Very narrow road tires on rim-brake wheels: Some older rim-brake road wheels with narrow tire clearance (23mm tires) don’t have great tubeless options. The rim profiles aren’t designed for it, and the tire volume is so low that sealant doesn’t have much room to work. These riders are often better served by quality tubes and puncture-resistant tires.
  • Riders who don’t want the maintenance: If checking sealant every few months and dealing with the occasional messy tire change sounds like more hassle than fixing a flat once or twice a year, tubes might be simpler for your riding style. Tubeless is lower-maintenance than people fear, but it’s not zero-maintenance.
  • Budget constraints: If you’re already running a reliable tubed setup and don’t flat often, the cost of tubeless tape, valves, sealant, and the setup fee might not pay for itself quickly. But if you’re flatting regularly — especially from road debris on Raleigh’s streets — tubeless pays for itself after preventing just a couple of flats.

The $25 per wheel covers all labor — rim prep, tape application, valve installation, tire mounting, bead seating, sealant addition, and seal verification. Consumables (tape, valves, sealant) are additional at their retail price. If you bring your own tape, valves, and sealant, you just pay the labor. We stock Stan’s, Orange Seal, and Muc-Off sealant, plus tubeless tape in common widths from 21mm to 35mm.
