A hand-built wheel is a different animal from a machine-built factory wheel. Every spoke is tensioned individually, stress-relieved by hand, and brought into true with a precision that mass production can’t match. The result is a wheel that’s stronger, stays true longer, and rolls better than what comes stock on most bikes. Custom wheel building at Bell Lap Cycleworks is $100 per wheel for labor, and it covers everything from lacing the spokes to final tensioning and truing. You choose the hub, rim, and spokes — or we help you spec the build based on your riding style, weight, and goals.
This service is for riders who want wheels built to their specific needs — whether that’s a bulletproof commuter wheelset, a lightweight climbing set, a wide-rim gravel setup, or a replacement wheel built on a hub you already own with a new rim and spokes. We also rebuild wheels when the rim is damaged but the hub is still good — no reason to throw away a quality hub when only the rim needs replacing.
What’s Included
Custom wheel building is a multi-step process. Here’s what happens from component selection through final quality check:
- Component consultation: We talk through what you need. What kind of riding? Road, gravel, mountain, commuting, touring? How much do you weigh? How aggressive are you on the bike? Do you prioritize durability, weight, or aerodynamics? These answers determine the hub, rim, spoke type, spoke count, and lacing pattern. We’ll spec a build that makes sense for your actual use — not just what looks cool on paper.
- Spoke length calculation: Every hub and rim combination requires a specific spoke length, calculated from the rim’s effective rim diameter (ERD), the hub’s flange diameter, and the flange-to-center distance. We measure and calculate rather than guess — a spoke that’s even 2mm too long or too short creates problems. Too long and the spoke threads bottom out in the nipple before reaching proper tension. Too short and there aren’t enough engaged threads for a secure connection.
- Hub preparation: We inspect the hub for bearing condition, axle straightness, and flange integrity before lacing. If the hub has been used before, we clean and regrease the bearings. Starting a wheel build on a hub with bad bearings defeats the purpose.
- Lacing: Spokes get laced into the hub and rim following the chosen pattern — radial, 2-cross, or 3-cross being the most common. Each pattern has trade-offs: radial is lightest but transfers less torque (fine for front non-disc wheels); 3-cross is the strongest and best for disc brakes and rear wheels; 2-cross splits the difference. We lace drive-side and non-drive-side spokes with the correct interlacing at crossing points — this isn’t just threading spokes through holes.
- Initial tensioning: Starting from hand-tight, we bring all spokes up to even tension in gradual rounds — typically 4-6 passes around the wheel, increasing tension incrementally each time. Rushing this step by cranking spokes tight too fast creates uneven tension that’s hard to correct later and can wind up the spokes.
- Lateral truing: With the wheel in the truing stand, we work spoke by spoke to eliminate side-to-side deviation. The target is under 0.5mm total lateral runout — tighter than most factory wheels ship from the box.
- Radial truing: We check and correct vertical hops — spots where the rim lifts or dips relative to a perfect circle. Radial truing requires careful tension balancing because pulling a section of rim inward (tighter spokes) also affects adjacent sections.
- Dish centering: The rim must sit exactly centered between the hub’s locknuts (or end caps on thru-axle hubs). On rear wheels, this is tricky because the drive-side spokes have higher tension than the non-drive side due to the offset created by the cassette. We measure dish with a dishing tool rather than eyeballing it — even a millimeter off-center creates a bike that pulls to one side.
- Spoke stress relief: This is the step that separates a good wheel build from a great one. After tensioning and truing, we squeeze parallel spoke pairs together around the entire wheel — sometimes multiple times. This relieves the torsional wind-up that builds in spokes during tensioning and settles each spoke into its natural seated position. A wheel that skips this step will de-true on the first hard ride as the spokes unwind and shift.
- Final tension check: We go around the wheel one more time with a tension meter, verifying that spoke tension is consistent across each side and within the manufacturer’s recommended range for the rim. Consistent tension is the single biggest factor in long-term wheel reliability.
- Final true and quality check: After stress relief, the wheel often needs a final light truing pass. We verify lateral, radial, and dish one last time, then spin-test the wheel for any issues before calling it done.
Why Build Custom Wheels?
Factory wheels work fine for many riders, but there are real reasons to go custom:
- Better component matching: Factory wheelsets are spec’d to hit a price point. The hub, rim, and spokes are chosen as a package deal — often with compromises on one or more components to keep cost down. A custom build lets you put your money where it matters most for your riding. Want a bombproof rim on a smooth-spinning hub with high-quality spokes? You can spec exactly that without paying for features you don’t need.
- Higher build quality: Machine-built wheels are laced and tensioned by automated equipment that works fast but can’t match the precision of a skilled hand build. Machine builders can’t feel when a nipple is binding, can’t assess whether the spoke bed is seating properly, and don’t stress-relieve spokes the way a human does. This is why factory wheels often need truing within the first few hundred miles — the spokes are settling in ways that weren’t addressed during the build.
- Repairability: A custom wheel built with standard J-bend spokes and a common hub can be serviced anywhere by any competent mechanic. Many factory wheelsets use proprietary spokes, bladed designs, or unique nipple interfaces that require brand-specific tools and parts. When a proprietary spoke breaks on a Saturday ride, you’re waiting for a special order. When a standard spoke breaks, any shop has one in stock.
- Rider-specific optimization: A 130-pound climber and a 210-pound crit racer need very different wheels. Spoke count, spoke gauge, rim width, and lacing pattern all change based on rider weight, riding style, and terrain. Factory wheels are designed for the average — custom builds are designed for you.
- Salvaging good components: If you crash and taco a rim but the hub is perfectly fine, a custom rebuild saves the hub (often the most expensive single component) and pairs it with a new rim and spokes. Same idea if you want to upgrade from an aluminum rim to carbon — keep the hub, build up with a new rim.
Common Build Types
We build wheels for every discipline. Here are the most common configurations we see:
- Road training/all-around: 28-32 spoke count, aluminum rim in the 19-21mm internal width range, quality sealed-bearing hub (DT Swiss 370, Hope RS4, or similar), double-butted stainless spokes (Sapim Race, DT Competition), 3-cross lacing. This is the workhorse build — durable, easy to service, and rides great for thousands of miles.
- Gravel/adventure: 28-32 spokes, wider aluminum rim (21-25mm internal width for 35-50mm tires), sealed-bearing hub with good weather sealing, double-butted spokes, 3-cross. The wider rim gives the tire a better profile and supports lower pressures for off-road grip. We see a lot of these builds for riders hitting Raleigh’s greenways and the gravel roads out in the countryside.
- Mountain bike: 28-32 spokes, wide aluminum rim (25-30mm+ internal width), boost-spaced hub (110×15 front, 148×12 rear), heavy-duty double-butted or straight-gauge spokes, 3-cross. Mountain wheels need to survive rocks, roots, and drops — spoke tension and rim choice matter more here than saving grams.
- Commuter/touring: 32-36 spokes for maximum load capacity, durable aluminum rim, reliable sealed-bearing or cup-and-cone hub (Shimano XT hubs are excellent here), straight-gauge or double-butted spokes, 3-cross. These wheels are built to carry weight — rider, bags, and gear — day after day without going out of true.
- Lightweight/racing: 20-28 spokes, carbon or lightweight aluminum rim, premium hub (Chris King, Industry Nine, DT Swiss 240), bladed or triple-butted spokes (Sapim CX-Ray, DT Aerolite), mixed lacing (radial front non-disc, 2-cross elsewhere). These builds optimize for weight and aerodynamics — they’re not as forgiving as a 32-spoke build, but they’re noticeably faster.
- Rebuild on existing hub: You bring us the hub (maybe from a crashed wheel or a wheelset you’re upgrading), we spec a new rim and spokes to match. This is the most cost-effective way to get a quality wheel when you already have a good hub sitting in the parts bin.
Spoke Selection
Spokes are the structural backbone of the wheel, and the type you choose affects weight, durability, and how the wheel rides:
- Straight-gauge (14g/2.0mm): Same thickness from end to end. Strongest option, slightly heavier. Good for heavy riders, touring wheels, and mountain bikes where durability is the priority.
- Double-butted (14/15/14g or 2.0/1.8/2.0mm): Thicker at the ends (where stress concentrates at the hub and nipple), thinner in the middle. This is the sweet spot for most riders — the thinner middle section adds compliance (absorbs vibration better) while the thicker ends maintain strength. Double-butted spokes also stay true longer because the thinner section acts as a spring, absorbing small impacts that would permanently deform a straight-gauge spoke.
- Triple-butted/bladed: Advanced profiles like Sapim CX-Ray or DT Aerolite are flat (bladed) in the middle for reduced aerodynamic drag and lighter weight. These are premium spokes for performance builds — they cost more but are measurably faster in the wind and lighter on the scale.
- J-bend vs. straight-pull: J-bend spokes have a 90-degree bend at the hub end and hook through the hub flange. Straight-pull spokes are straight from end to end and require a hub designed for them. J-bend is the standard — universally replaceable and available everywhere. Straight-pull can be slightly stronger at the hub interface but limits you to specific hub designs and harder-to-find replacement spokes.
We stock Sapim and DT Swiss spokes in common lengths and can order specific lengths for any build. Most spoke orders arrive within a few days.
Turnaround and Process
A typical custom wheel build takes 2-5 business days from the time we have all components in hand. The build itself takes 1-2 hours per wheel of focused bench time, but we often need to order spokes cut to a specific length, which adds a day or two for delivery. Here’s the typical timeline:
- Day 1: Consultation, component selection, spoke length calculation, parts ordering (if needed)
- Day 2-3: Parts arrive (if ordered)
- Day 3-5: Lacing, tensioning, truing, stress relief, final check

Components (hub, rim, spokes, nipples) are priced separately at retail. If you’re supplying your own components, you just pay the build labor. We can provide a complete build estimate — labor plus all parts — before you commit, so there are no surprises.
