Pre-Purchase Fitting Consultation

Get Fitted Before You Buy a Bike

Shopping for a new road, gravel, or mountain bike is exciting — but buying the wrong size is an expensive mistake. At Bell Lap Cycleworks in Raleigh, our pre-purchase bike fitting consultation takes the guesswork out of your next bike purchase. We’ll figure out exactly what frame size, geometry, and setup you need before you spend a dime.

Too many riders end up on bikes that don’t fit. Maybe the reach is too long, the stack height is off, or the saddle position never feels right no matter how much you adjust it. A pre-purchase fitting helps you avoid all of that. You walk into the shop (or start your search online) knowing precisely what you need.

What the Consultation Includes

Here’s how it works. We’ll sit down and talk about your riding goals — whether you’re looking for a road bike for weekend centuries, a gravel rig for mixed-surface adventures, or a mountain bike for Triangle-area trails. Then we take a series of body measurements and assess your flexibility, riding experience, and any comfort issues you’ve dealt with in the past.

From there, we use that data to recommend:

  • Frame size and geometry that matches your body proportions
  • Stem length and handlebar width for the right reach and control
  • Saddle type and position based on your sit bone width and riding style
  • Crank length for efficient pedaling without knee strain
  • Specific bike models from the brands we carry that match your fit profile

We’re an authorized dealer for Specialized, Bianchi, TIME, Niner, and State Bicycle, so if one of those brands is the right fit, we can get you on the exact bike — built up and dialed in at our shop.

Why Get Fitted Before Buying?

A pre-purchase fitting saves you money and frustration. Here’s what we see all the time: someone buys a bike online or from a big box store based on a size chart, rides it for a few weeks, and then comes to us because something hurts. By that point, they’ve already spent the money — and sometimes the fix is that they need a different frame entirely.

Getting fitted first means you buy the right bike the first time. No returns, no regrets, no expensive swaps down the road. It’s especially worth it if you’re spending $1,500 or more on a bike — which most serious road, gravel, and mountain bikes cost these days.

After You Buy: Comprehensive Fitting

Once you’ve picked up your new bike, we recommend scheduling a comprehensive bike fitting to fine-tune everything. That session uses saddle pressure mapping to dial in your position on your own bike down to the millimeter. The pre-purchase consultation gets you on the right bike — the comprehensive fitting makes sure every contact point is perfect.
