Saddle Pressure Mapping
Saddle Pressure Mapping in Raleigh, NC
If you’ve ever finished a ride with numbness, saddle sores, or that constant urge to shift around in the saddle, the problem usually isn’t the saddle itself — it’s how you’re sitting on it. At Bell Lap Cycleworks, we use saddle pressure mapping to see exactly what’s happening between you and the saddle, so we can fix it instead of guessing.
What Is Saddle Pressure Mapping?
We place a thin sensor mat on your saddle and have you ride. As you pedal, the mat captures real-time pressure data — showing us exactly where your weight is concentrated, how your pelvis is positioned, and whether you’re stable or rocking side to side. It takes the guesswork out of saddle fit.
Most saddle discomfort comes down to a mismatch between your anatomy and how the saddle supports you. Pressure mapping gives us an objective picture of that interaction, which is something you can’t see just by watching someone ride.
How the Process Works
Here’s what to expect when you come in for saddle pressure mapping:
- Sensor mat placement — We put a specialized pressure sensor on your current saddle. You won’t feel it while riding — it’s thin and sits right on top.
- Ride and capture — You pedal for a few minutes while the sensor records pressure data in real time. We’re looking at pressure distribution, pelvic position, and stability throughout your pedal stroke.
- Data review — The sensor generates a detailed pressure map showing exactly where the hot spots are, how your pelvis engages with the saddle, and whether your sit bones are properly supported.
- Adjustments and recommendations — Based on what the data shows, we can adjust your saddle position (tilt, height, fore-aft), recommend a different saddle shape or width, or make changes to your overall fit. Every recommendation is backed by what we see in the data.
Common Issues We Fix
Saddle pressure mapping is especially helpful if you’re dealing with:
- Saddle sores — Usually caused by excess pressure or friction in soft tissue areas. The map shows us exactly where and why.
- Numbness — Pressure on nerves and blood vessels is one of the most common cycling complaints. We can see it in the data and fix the cause.
- General discomfort — If you can never get comfortable no matter what saddle you try, the problem is often pelvic position, not the saddle itself.
- Pelvic instability — Rocking or shifting while you pedal wastes energy and creates uneven pressure. We can spot this in real time and address the root cause.
- Sit bone pain — If your saddle is too narrow, too wide, or your position puts weight in the wrong place, the pressure map makes it obvious.
Why Pelvic Engagement Matters
Your pelvis is the foundation of your riding position. How it sits on the saddle affects everything — power transfer, comfort, and even how much strain goes through your lower back and knees. During pressure mapping, we pay close attention to pelvic engagement: how your pelvis tilts, how stable it stays through the pedal stroke, and whether both sides are loading evenly.
A lot of riders deal with pain or discomfort that’s really a pelvic position issue, not a saddle issue. The pressure map helps us tell the difference and make the right fix.
Who Is This For?
Saddle pressure mapping is a great standalone service if you’re mostly comfortable on the bike but struggling with saddle-specific issues. It’s also included as part of our comprehensive bike fitting, which covers your entire position from cleats to handlebars on your own bike.
If you’ve tried multiple saddles and nothing feels right, this is usually the fastest way to figure out what’s actually going on. We’ve helped hundreds of riders in Raleigh solve saddle problems they’d been fighting for years.
