Bike Wheel Repair & Services

Bike Wheel Repair in Raleigh, NC

Your wheels take more abuse than any other part of your bike. Every pothole, curb, and rough stretch of gravel passes directly through your hubs, spokes, and rims. When something goes wrong with your wheels, you feel it immediately — a wobble in the front end, a flat that keeps coming back, a grinding noise from the hub every time you coast. Bell Lap Cycleworks handles bike wheel repair for road, gravel, mountain, and commuter bikes at both of our Raleigh locations.

We work on all wheel types — clincher, tubeless, and tubular — and we’re set up for everything from a quick flat fix to a full custom wheel build. Whether you’re riding carbon deep-section race wheels or aluminum training hoops, we’ve got the tools and the know-how to get them rolling right.

Wheel Services & Pricing

We publish our pricing because you should know what things cost before you walk in. Here’s what we charge for wheel work:

  • Front Hub Bearing Overhaul — $30
  • Rear Hub Bearing Service — $40
  • Tire Installation / Flat Repair — $15
  • Wheel Truing — $30
  • Internal Wheel Truing — $45
  • Tubeless Setup — $25
  • Custom Wheel Building — $100

Parts are additional where needed. If your wheel needs a new spoke, bearing set, tire, or rim tape, we’ll let you know the total cost before we start the work — no surprises.

Common Wheel Problems We Fix

Not sure what’s going on with your wheels? Here are the issues we see most often:

Wobbly wheel. If your wheel has a visible side-to-side wobble, it needs truing. This happens over time as spokes loosen from riding, or after hitting a pothole or curb. We tension and true the wheel on a professional truing stand so it spins straight. Standard truing is $30, and most wheels are done same-day.

Flat tires. The most common wheel issue, period. We’ll find the puncture, patch or replace the tube, and check the tire for embedded glass, thorns, or wire that could cause another flat. Tire installation and flat repair is just $10. If your tires are worn, we can recommend replacements and get them mounted while you wait.

Rough or noisy hub. If you hear grinding when you coast, or the wheel doesn’t spin freely when you lift it off the ground, your hub bearings likely need service. Bearings wear out from water, dirt, and miles. A front hub bearing overhaul ($30) or rear hub bearing service ($40) replaces the old grease, inspects the bearing surfaces, and gets the hub spinning smooth again. This is one of those services that makes an old wheelset feel noticeably better.

Broken spokes. A single broken spoke throws your wheel out of true and puts extra stress on the remaining spokes. We’ll replace the broken spoke, re-tension the wheel, and check for any underlying issues. If you’re breaking spokes regularly, it usually means the wheel needs a full re-tension or the rim is reaching end of life.

Difficulty going tubeless. Tubeless setups can be finicky — sealant dries out, rim tape lifts, or the tire bead just won’t seat. If you’ve been fighting your tubeless setup, bring it by. We’ll check the tape, refresh the sealant, and get the bead seated properly for $15.

Standard Truing vs. Internal Truing

We offer two types of wheel truing, and the difference comes down to how the spokes are accessed.

Standard wheel truing ($30) is for wheels where the spoke nipples are accessible from the outside of the rim. This covers most aluminum training wheels, entry-level wheelsets, and many mountain bike wheels. We put the wheel in the stand, find the high and low spots, and adjust spoke tension until the wheel runs true.

Internal wheel truing ($45) is for wheels where the spoke nipples are accessed from inside the rim — you have to remove the rim tape to reach them. This is typical on carbon deep-section wheels, higher-end aluminum wheelsets, and many aero road wheels. Internal nipples make for a cleaner aerodynamic profile, but they take more time and care to adjust. The tire and rim tape have to come off, the nipples get adjusted through the valve hole or rim bed, and everything gets reassembled and sealed back up. If you’re running tubeless on internal-nipple wheels, we’ll re-tape and re-seal as part of the job.

Tubeless Setup

Tubeless is one of the biggest trends in cycling right now, and for good reason. Running tubeless means fewer flats, lower rolling resistance, and a smoother ride quality — especially on gravel and mountain bikes. More and more road riders are making the switch too.

Here’s how it works: we remove your tubes, install tubeless-compatible rim tape, add sealant, and seat the tire bead with a compressor. The sealant inside the tire automatically plugs small punctures as you ride. No more stopping on the side of the road to change a tube every time you hit a piece of glass.

Our tubeless setup is $25 per wheel. If your rims and tires are already tubeless-compatible, it’s a straightforward job. If you’re not sure whether your wheels can run tubeless, bring them by and we’ll take a look — we can help you figure out your options.

Custom Wheel Building

Want a wheelset built to your exact specs? Our custom wheel building service ($100 per wheel, parts additional) lets you pick the hub, rim, and spoke combination that matches how you ride. Whether you’re building a bombproof gravel wheelset, a lightweight climbing set, or a durable commuter build, we’ll lace, tension, and true the wheel by hand.

Custom-built wheels last longer and ride better than most factory wheels because every spoke is hand-tensioned and stress-relieved. If you’ve got a specific build in mind — or you just want advice on what would work for your riding — give us a call and we’ll talk through the options. Check out our custom builds page for more on our build process.

Bring Your Wheels By

We offer same-week service availability for most wheel work. Simple jobs like flat repairs and tubeless setups are usually done same-day. Truing, hub service, and wheel builds depend on parts availability, but we’ll give you a clear timeline upfront.
