Bike Assembly from Box

Bike Assembly from Box in Raleigh — $75

You found a great deal on a bike online. Maybe it’s a Canyon road bike, a YT mountain bike, something off eBay, or a direct-to-consumer brand that ships straight to your door. The price was right, and you pulled the trigger. Now it’s sitting in a giant cardboard box in your garage, and you’re staring at a pile of parts, plastic wrap, and zip ties wondering what comes next. Bell Lap Cycleworks can help. Our Bike Build from Box service is $75, and we’ll have your new bike assembled, adjusted, inspected, and ready to ride.

We’ve been building bikes in Raleigh for over 15 years — from high-end race machines to everyday commuters. Whether your box came from Canyon, YT, Poseidon, Fezzari, Amazon, or anywhere else, we know what we’re looking at and we’ll build it right.

What’s Included in Our Box Build Service

Here’s what you get for $75 — no hidden charges, no surprises:

  • Full assembly from the shipping box — we unpack everything, remove all packaging materials, and build the bike from scratch
  • Headset torque and adjustment — properly torqued to manufacturer specs so your steering is smooth and secure
  • Handlebar alignment and stem torque — everything straight, everything tight
  • Derailleur adjustment — front and rear derailleurs indexed for clean, reliable shifting
  • Brake adjustment — whether it’s rim brakes, mechanical disc, or hydraulic, we’ll make sure they’re dialed
  • Wheel truing check — we check both wheels for true and tension out of the box
  • Tire inflation — set to the right pressure for your tire size and riding style
  • Full safety inspection — every bolt checked, every quick release verified, every system tested before your first ride

When you pick up the bike, we’ll walk you through everything and make sure the fit feels right. If something needs a quick adjustment — seat height, lever reach, handlebar angle — we’ll handle it on the spot.

Why Professional Assembly Matters

Most bikes ordered online arrive 80-90% assembled. That sounds almost done, but the remaining 10-20% is where the critical stuff lives. We’re talking about headset torque, brake alignment, derailleur indexing, and bolt specs — the things that keep you safe on the road or trail. Get the headset too loose and your fork develops play. Over-torque a carbon steerer and you risk cracking it. Miss a derailleur limit screw and your chain drops into the spokes at 25 mph. These aren’t hypothetical problems. We see them regularly from DIY assemblies that looked fine on YouTube but went wrong in practice.

A professional build also catches manufacturing issues before they become your problem. We’ve pulled bikes out of boxes with wheels that were way out of true, brakes that needed a full bleed, and derailleurs that were bent in shipping. When you know what to look for, you catch these things. When you don’t, you find out the hard way — usually on your first ride.

The tools matter too. Torque wrenches, headset presses, cable cutters, chain tools, bleed kits — we’ve got everything needed to do the job correctly. You shouldn’t have to buy $300 worth of specialty tools to assemble one bike.

Common Issues We Fix During Box Builds

After building hundreds of bikes from boxes, here are the things we see most often:

  • Loose or improperly torqued headsets — the most common issue, especially on direct-to-consumer bikes
  • Derailleur limit screws not set — leading to chain drops and potential spoke damage
  • Brake pads rubbing or poorly aligned — especially on disc brake bikes that ship with rotors slightly bent
  • Cables that need tension adjustment — factory pre-set cable tension rarely holds after shipping
  • Wheels out of true — shipping vibration and handling can knock wheels out of spec
  • Handlebars and stem not properly aligned — cosmetic but also a handling and safety issue

We address all of these as part of the standard $75 build. No extra charges for finding and fixing what’s wrong out of the box.

Need More Than Basic Assembly?

The $75 build covers everything needed to get your bike assembled and riding safely. But if you want to go further, we can add on other services at the time of assembly:

  • Tubeless tire setup — $25 per wheel. If your new bike came with tubeless-ready wheels and tires, we can set them up with sealant so you’re running tubeless from day one. Check our custom services for more options.
  • Pedal swap or installation — $15. If you’ve got clipless pedals to install, we’ll get them on and torqued.
  • Bike fitting — if you’re investing in a new bike, a professional bike fitting makes sure you’re getting the most out of it. We recommend scheduling a fit after your assembly so we can dial in position on the actual bike.
  • Chain waxing — $75. Start with a Silca hot wax treatment for a cleaner, quieter, longer-lasting drivetrain from your very first ride.

Just let us know when you drop off the box, and we’ll take care of everything in one visit. If you’ve got a full custom build in mind — picking every component from the ground up — that’s a different service ($275 build fee), but we’re happy to talk through both options.
