Bike Drivetrain Repair in Raleigh, NC

Skipping gears, chain rub, sloppy shifting, or a chain that keeps dropping — these are some of the most common problems we see at Bell Lap Cycleworks, and they all trace back to the drivetrain. Your drivetrain is the system that makes your bike go: the chain, cassette, chainrings, derailleurs, shifters, and cables all working together to turn pedal strokes into forward motion. When any one of those parts is worn, misadjusted, or damaged, it affects the whole system.

We handle bike drivetrain repair for road bikes, mountain bikes, gravel bikes, and commuters across Raleigh, North Raleigh, and the Triangle Area. With 15+ years of combined experience and transparent pricing, we’ll tell you exactly what’s going on and what it costs to fix — no guessing.

Common Drivetrain Problems We Fix

If something doesn’t feel right when you shift, pedal, or coast, there’s a good chance it’s drivetrain-related. Here’s what to watch for:

  • Skipping gears — usually a stretched chain, worn cassette, or misadjusted derailleur
  • Chain drop — front derailleur limit screws, chainring wear, or chain length issues
  • Slow or imprecise shifting — cable tension, frayed housing, or contaminated cables
  • Chain stretch — normal wear over time, but it accelerates wear on your cassette and chainrings if you don’t catch it
  • Worn cassette teeth — shark-fin shaped teeth that cause skipping under load
  • Stiff chain links — a single tight link can cause a skip every pedal revolution
  • Ghost shifting — the bike shifts on its own, often caused by cable housing routing or a bent derailleur hanger

Not sure what’s going on? Bring your bike by and we’ll take a look. A quick diagnosis doesn’t cost anything, and we’ll tell you exactly what we find.

Shifting & Cable Services

Most shifting problems come down to cables and derailleur adjustment. Cables stretch, housing gets contaminated, and limit screws drift over time. These are some of the quickest and most affordable fixes we do — and they make a huge difference in how your bike rides.

  • Derailleur Adjustment — $10/derailleur
  • Derailleur Cable Installation — $10
  • Derailleur Installation — $20
  • Shifter Installation — $15 (mountain) / $25 (road)
  • Shift Cable & Housing Replacement — $35

If your shifting feels vague or slow, a fresh set of cables and housing plus a derailleur adjustment is usually all it takes. We use quality cables and housing on every install because cheap cables stretch faster and corrode sooner — that’s just more work for you down the road.

Chain & Cassette Services

Your chain and cassette wear together. A stretched chain wears down your cassette teeth, and a worn cassette chews up a new chain. Catching chain wear early saves you money because a $10 chain swap is a lot cheaper than replacing the whole cassette and chain together.

  • Chain Installation — $10
  • Cassette Installation / Swap — $10

We check chain wear as part of every tune-up, so if you’re on a regular service schedule, we’ll catch it before it becomes an expensive problem. If you want to extend chain life even further, check out our chain waxing service — a Silca hot wax treatment that reduces friction, keeps your drivetrain clean, and significantly slows chain wear.

Crankset & Bottom Bracket Services

The crankset and bottom bracket are the foundation of your drivetrain. If you’re hearing creaking when you pedal, feeling play in the cranks, or noticing chainring teeth that look like shark fins, it’s time to get these looked at.

  • Bottom Bracket Services — $30
  • Chainring Installation — $35
  • Crankset Installation — $25

Bottom bracket work requires specific tools for each standard (BSA, press-fit, T47, BB30, etc.), and we have them all. Whether you’re replacing worn bearings or upgrading to a new crankset, we’ll make sure everything is torqued to spec and running smooth.

Pedal Installation

  • Pedal Installation / Swap — $10

Switching from flats to clipless? Swapping pedals between bikes? We’ll make sure they’re greased and torqued properly so they don’t seize in the crank arm — a common problem when pedals are installed dry or over-tightened.
