Bell Lap Cycleworks offers a dedicated race bike cleaning service ($75) — what we call a race wash — built for competitive cyclists in Raleigh, Wake County, and the Triangle Area who need their bike cleaned right after a hard race or a long, dirty ride.
This isn’t a quick spray with a garden hose. It’s a thorough, mechanic-grade deep clean that gets your bike back to a rideable, inspectable state. We know what race bikes go through because we’re riders ourselves — Bell Lap sponsors Rescue Racing, and we’ve seen firsthand what cyclocross mud, gravel dust, and road grime do to components when they sit uncleaned.
What’s Included in the Race Wash
Here’s what you get when you bring your bike by for a race wash:
- Full frame wash and degrease — We clean every surface of the frame, fork, seatpost, and cockpit. All the grit, mud, and road film gets stripped away so you can actually see your paint again.
- Drivetrain deep clean — Chain, cassette, chainrings, derailleurs, and jockey wheels all get degreased and scrubbed. This is where most of the damaging gunk hides after a race.
- Wheel cleaning — Rims, spokes, and hubs are cleaned and inspected. We make sure spoke tension looks right and nothing got knocked loose.
- Brake rotor cleaning — Contaminated brake rotors kill your stopping power. We clean rotors thoroughly so your brakes bite the way they should.
- Chain cleaning and re-lubing — Your chain gets a full clean and fresh lube application. If you run a waxed chain, we’ll re-wax it instead (we use the Silca wax system).
- Race damage inspection — This is the part most people skip when they clean their own bike. We look over the frame, wheels, and components for cracks, dings, loose bolts, or wear you’d miss under the dirt. If something needs attention, we’ll let you know before it becomes a bigger problem.
Who Needs a Race Wash?
This service was built for competitive cyclists, but it’s for anyone whose bike is seriously dirty. Here’s who typically brings their bike in:
Cyclocross racers — CX bikes come back absolutely filthy. Mud packed in the drivetrain, grit in the brake calipers, dirt everywhere. The Raleigh cyclocross scene is active, and we see a steady stream of bikes after local CX races that need serious cleaning before the next weekend.
Gravel racers and riders — Gravel events like the ones held across central North Carolina leave bikes coated in fine dust and clay. That stuff gets into everything — headset bearings, bottom brackets, cable housing. A proper wash after a gravel event saves you money on replacement parts down the road.
Mountain bikers — Trail grime is different from road grime. It’s thicker, stickier, and gets into places you wouldn’t expect. If you’ve been riding local trails after rain, you know exactly what we mean.
Road racers and crit riders — Road bikes get less mud, but criterium racing and road races still coat your bike in road film, brake dust, and chain splatter. A clean bike shifts better, brakes better, and is easier to maintain between races.
Multi-day trip riders — Back from a bikepacking trip or a long tour? Your bike has earned a thorough clean. Bring it in and we’ll get it sorted.
Or maybe your bike is just really dirty and you want it cleaned properly. That works too. You don’t need a race number pinned to your jersey to use this service.
Why a Post-Race Clean Matters
It’s tempting to throw your bike in the garage after a race and deal with it later. We get it — you’re tired. But here’s what happens when grime sits on your bike:
- Drivetrain wear accelerates. Grit acts like sandpaper on your chain, cassette, and chainrings. A dirty drivetrain wears out two to three times faster than a clean one. That’s real money in replacement parts you didn’t need to spend.
- Brake performance drops. Contaminated brake pads and rotors don’t stop you as well. Mud and oil on disc brake systems can require a full pad replacement if it sits too long — cleaning them right away saves the pads.
- You miss damage. Cracks in carbon frames, bent derailleur hangers, loose spokes — these things hide under mud. A clean bike is an inspectable bike, and catching problems early is always cheaper than catching them late.
- Bearings suffer. Headset and bottom bracket bearings don’t like sitting in water and grit. The sooner you clean and dry your bike after a wet race, the longer those bearings last.
We see it all the time — a rider brings in a bike for what they think is a shifting problem, and it turns out the drivetrain is just worn out from months of riding dirty. A $75 race wash after each event costs a lot less than a $200+ drivetrain replacement.
Pair It with Chain Waxing or a Tune-Up
If you’re already bringing your bike in for a race wash, it’s a great time to think about your chain. Our chain waxing service ($75) using the Silca system gives you a cleaner, quieter, longer-lasting drivetrain. Waxed chains shed dirt instead of attracting it — which means your next post-race cleanup is easier too.
If we spot anything during the inspection that needs more than a wash — worn brake pads, a stretched chain, shifting issues — we can roll right into a tune-up. Our Basic Tune-Up ($95) covers adjustments, and the Standard Tune-Up ($175) adds cable and housing replacement. We’ll always tell you what we find and let you decide what to do about it.

Bring Your Bike By
Bell Lap Cycleworks has two locations in North Raleigh — 6300 Creedmoor Rd #138 and 8480 Honeycutt Rd #126 (Lafayette Village). Creedmoor Road is open Monday–Friday 10 AM–6 PM; Lafayette Village is open Tuesday–Saturday 10 AM–6 PM. Race wash turnaround is typically same-day if you drop off in the morning.
