Custom Bike Builds in Raleigh

If you’ve got a specific bike in mind — the exact frame, groupset, wheels, and cockpit setup — Bell Lap Cycleworks can build it for you. A custom bike build lets you pick every component, so you end up with a bike that fits your riding style instead of settling for whatever comes stock. We charge a flat $275 build fee, and we handle everything from frame prep to final quality check.

Whether you’re putting together a race-ready road bike, a gravel machine for the trails around North Raleigh, a mountain bike for hitting the local singletrack, or a daily commuter that actually fits, we’ve done it all. As authorized dealers for Specialized, Bianchi, TIME, Niner, and State Bicycle, we can source frames and components at dealer pricing — and we’ll help you figure out what makes sense for your budget and goals.

How Our Custom Build Process Works

Here’s how it works from start to finish:

  1. Consultation: We sit down with you to talk about what you want to ride, where you’re riding, and what your budget looks like. If you’re not sure about sizing, we recommend a pre-purchase bike fitting before we order anything — it saves time and money.
  2. Component Selection: We help you pick out the frame, groupset, wheelset, cockpit, saddle, and finishing kit. We can order through our dealer accounts or work with parts you already have.
  3. Assembly: We build the bike in-house. Every cable is cut and routed properly, every bearing is greased, every bolt is torqued to spec. No shortcuts.
  4. Quality Control: Before the bike leaves the shop, it goes through our full QC checklist — headset adjustment, derailleur indexing, brake alignment, wheel true, tire pressure, and a test ride to make sure everything feels right.
  5. Final Handoff: We walk you through the bike, make any last adjustments on the spot, and send you out the door ready to ride.

Most custom builds take one to two weeks once all parts arrive. If you need something on a tighter timeline, give us a call and we’ll see what we can do.

Why Build Custom Instead of Buying Off the Shelf?

Off-the-shelf bikes are designed for the widest possible audience. That means the components are chosen to hit a price point, not to match your specific needs. With a custom build, you choose every part. You’re not stuck with a wheelset you’ll replace in six months or a saddle that doesn’t work for you. You get exactly what you want from day one.

Custom builds also make sense when you want a specific frame that isn’t available as a complete bike, or when you’ve got a pile of good components from a previous build and want to move them to a new frame. We’ve done everything from full Shimano Di2 road builds to simple steel commuter setups — there’s no wrong answer.

One of our favorite recent projects was a Salsa Cutthroat bikepacking build — a purpose-built adventure rig designed for long days on mixed terrain. That kind of project is where a custom build really shines, because you’re making decisions based on how and where you actually ride.

Bike Build from Box — $75

Bought a bike online? We get it — sometimes the deal is too good to pass up. But assembling a bike from a shipping box the right way takes the right tools, the right torque specs, and a trained eye for detail. Our Bike Build from Box service is $75, and we’ll assemble your new bike properly so you know it’s safe and ready to ride.

This includes full assembly, headset installation, brake and derailleur adjustment, wheel true check, and a safety inspection. It’s the same attention to detail we put into our custom builds — just applied to a bike that shows up in cardboard.
