Professional Bike Fitting in Raleigh, NC

A professional bike fitting is a process where we measure your body, watch how you move on the bike, and systematically adjust every contact point — saddle height, fore-aft position, handlebar reach, cleat alignment — until your bike fits the way your body actually works. This isn’t about making you fit the bike. It’s about making the bike fit you. We use saddle pressure mapping technology and direct observation to see what’s happening between you and the machine, then we make precise changes based on data, not guesswork. The result is a position that’s more comfortable, more efficient, and sustainable for the kind of riding you actually do. At Bell Lap Cycleworks in North Raleigh, NC, a comprehensive fitting is $250 and runs two to three hours, performed by Josh Hatchell, our IBFI-certified fitter.

Most riders have never been professionally fitted. They buy a bike, the shop sets the saddle to a rough height, and that’s it. Maybe they adjust the seat a few times, swap stems, try different saddles — but they’re guessing. A fitting removes the guesswork. We measure your flexibility, leg length, and riding style, then build a position from the ground up that addresses the root cause of discomfort or inefficiency. Whether you’re dealing with knee pain, numb hands, saddle discomfort, or you just want to ride faster and longer without falling apart, a fitting is the single most effective thing you can do. At Bell Lap Cycleworks, our fitter Josh Hatchell has been fitting riders across Raleigh and the Triangle for over 15 years, and it’s the service that brings people to us from Durham, Chapel Hill, and Wake County.

When can I get a bike fitting?

Fittings are by appointment only. We schedule them on specific days at each shop so Josh can dedicate full focus to each session:

Who should get a bike fitting?

A professional fitting isn’t just for racers. If any of these sound familiar, we can help:

  • Knee pain during or after rides — one of the most common signs your saddle height or cleat position is off
  • Neck and shoulder pain — usually means your reach or handlebar height needs adjustment
  • Hand numbness or tingling — often caused by too much weight on your hands from poor weight distribution
  • Saddle discomfort — if you’ve tried three saddles and nothing works, the problem is probably position, not the saddle
  • New bike — you just spent good money on a bike; make sure it actually fits you before you put miles on it
  • Returning from injury — your body has changed, and your old fit may not work anymore
  • Performance plateau — you’re training hard but your power numbers aren’t improving, and position could be the limiting factor
  • Long ride comfort — you’re fine for the first hour but fall apart on anything over 50 miles
  • Indoor cycling — Peloton, Zwift, and Wahoo setups all benefit from a proper fitting

The bottom line: if you’re riding more than a few times a month and something doesn’t feel right, a fitting is the fastest way to fix it.

What’s Included in a Full Bike Fitting

This isn’t a quick saddle height check. You bring your bike in, and we fit you on it — every contact point dialed in on the bike you actually ride. Here’s what to expect:

  • Pre-fit interview — We’ll talk about your riding history, goals, any pain or discomfort, and the kind of riding you do (road, gravel, mountain, triathlon)
  • Physical assessment — We check flexibility, leg length, range of motion, and any asymmetries that affect your position
  • On-bike fitting session — You’ll ride your own bike on the trainer while we fine-tune your saddle height, reach, handlebar drop, and cleat position in real time
  • Saddle pressure mapping — A pressure sensor on the saddle shows us exactly where your weight sits, so we can recommend the right saddle shape and width for your anatomy
  • Adjustments — We make all the changes to your bike during the session so you ride out dialed in
  • Documentation — You’ll get a record of your fit numbers so you can replicate the position on future bikes

The whole process takes about two to three hours. We don’t rush it.

Who does the bike fitting at Bell Lap?

All fittings at Bell Lap Cycleworks are performed by Josh Hatchell, co-owner and our lead bike fitter. Josh has been fitting riders in the Raleigh area for years and brings a methodical, rider-first approach to every session. He’s not trying to sell you parts — he’s trying to get you comfortable on the bike you have. If something does need to change (a stem swap, different saddle, cleat adjustment), he’ll explain exactly why before making any recommendations.

Josh works with road cyclists, gravel riders, mountain bikers, and triathletes. This combination of hands-on experience and real data is why riders drive from Durham, Chapel Hill, and across Wake County to get fitted here. It’s not guesswork. It’s a repeatable process that gets real results.

What other fitting services do you offer?

In addition to our full bike fitting, we offer three specialized fitting services depending on what you need:

Pre-Purchase Fitting

Thinking about a new bike? Get fitted first. Our IBFI-certified process determines your ideal geometry and sizing so you buy the right frame the first time — no expensive mistakes. This is especially useful if you’re choosing between sizes or comparing brands. See how pre-purchase fitting works.

Cleat Adjustment

Cleat position has a huge impact on knee tracking, power transfer, and comfort. If you’ve recently switched pedals, bought new shoes, or your knees are talking to you, a cleat adjustment can make a big difference. Details on cleat adjustment.

Indoor Trainer Fitting

Your indoor setup is different from your road setup — different bike, different posture, different demands. We’ll get your Peloton, Zwift rig, or Wahoo trainer dialed in so you can ride pain-free indoors. Includes a 30-day follow-up if you need fine-tuning. Learn about indoor trainer fitting.

Off-site fittings: Add $15 for travel within 15 miles of our Creedmoor Road shop, or $25 for any location beyond 15 miles. Travel fee stacks on top of the underlying fitting price.
