Bicycle Frame Service in Raleigh — Keeping Your Bike Aligned and Running Smooth

Your frame is the backbone of your bike. Every other component bolts to it, pivots through it, or spins inside it. When something’s off at the frame level — a bent derailleur hanger, a loose headset, a creaky bottom bracket — you feel it everywhere. Shifting gets sloppy. Steering feels vague. Pedaling sounds like a percussion section. At Bell Lap Cycleworks, we handle the frame-level bicycle service that keeps everything aligned and spinning the way it should. We’ve been working on bikes in Raleigh for over 15 years, and these are some of the most common issues we see walk through the door.

Common Frame Issues We Fix

Frame services cover the structural and bearing components that sit at the core of your bike. They’re easy to overlook because they don’t wear out as visibly as brake pads or tires — but when they go, the symptoms show up everywhere. Here’s what to watch for:

Bent derailleur hanger. This is one of the most common problems we see, and it’s the cause of a lot of frustrating shifting issues. If your chain keeps dropping, your rear derailleur won’t stay in gear, or you’re getting ghost shifts mid-ride, there’s a good chance your hanger is bent. It doesn’t take much — a minor crash, laying the bike on its drive side, even a hard bump can knock it out of alignment. A bent hanger also puts stress on your drivetrain components, so it’s worth catching early.

Loose or creaky headset. If your steering feels wobbly, or you hear a clunking sound when you hit bumps or brake hard, your headset probably needs attention. The headset bearings sit where the fork meets the frame, and they take a beating over time. A quick adjustment can tighten things up and get rid of that play. If you can feel it rocking when you grab the front brake and push the bike back and forth, bring it by — it’s a quick fix.

Worn headset bearings. Different from a loose headset. If turning your handlebars feels gritty, notchy, or rough instead of smooth, the bearings inside the headset are worn out or contaminated. Riding through rain, washing the bike regularly, or just putting in the miles will eventually break down the grease and let dirt in. An overhaul — pulling the fork, cleaning everything out, repacking or replacing the bearings — solves it.

Bottom bracket creak or play. That rhythmic creak or click that syncs with your pedal stroke? Nine times out of ten, that’s your bottom bracket. The BB is the bearing assembly that your cranks spin through, and it sits in a spot that collects water, grit, and road spray. Over time, the bearings wear, the grease breaks down, and you start hearing it on every pedal stroke. Left alone, it’ll get worse and can damage the frame’s BB shell. An overhaul strips it all down, cleans it out, and gets it spinning quietly again.

Adjustment vs. Overhaul — Here’s How It Works

You’ll see both “adjustment” and “overhaul” on our service list. Here’s the difference:

An adjustment is a quick fix. We’re tightening, realigning, or re-indexing something that’s loosened up or shifted out of spec. No teardown, no parts replacement. It’s fast, affordable, and often all you need — especially if you’re catching the issue early.

An overhaul is a full teardown. We disassemble the component, clean everything, inspect the bearings and contact surfaces, regrease (or replace bearings if they’re shot), and reassemble to spec. It takes longer but it’s the right call when adjustments aren’t holding, when you’re hearing noise that won’t go away, or when you can’t remember the last time it was serviced. Think of it like the difference between topping off your oil and doing a full oil change.

Frame Services Pricing

We keep our pricing straightforward. No surprises, no hidden fees. Here’s what frame services cost at Bell Lap:

  • Derailleur Hanger Adjustment — $30 — We use a precision alignment gauge to straighten the hanger back to spec. If it’s too damaged to straighten, we’ll let you know and can source a replacement.
  • Headset Adjustment — $15 — Tighten and re-tension the headset to eliminate play and restore smooth steering. Quick turnaround.
  • Headset Overhaul — $30 — Full teardown of the headset assembly. Clean, inspect, regrease, and replace bearings if needed. Fork comes out, everything gets attention.
  • Bottom Bracket Overhaul — $40 — Complete disassembly, cleaning, inspection, and regreasing of the bottom bracket. New bearings installed if the old ones are worn. Eliminates creak and restores smooth pedaling.

Parts are additional if bearings or a replacement hanger are needed. We’ll always let you know before doing extra work — no surprises.

Why Frame Services Matter More Than You Think

These services are the ones that get put off the longest. A creaky bottom bracket doesn’t stop you from riding. A slightly bent hanger still shifts — just not well. A loose headset feels a little weird, but you get used to it. The problem is that all of these issues get worse over time and start affecting other parts of the bike. A bent hanger wears out your cassette and chain faster. A worn headset chews up your frame’s head tube. A bad bottom bracket can damage the BB shell.

Catching these early with a simple adjustment saves you money down the road. And when it’s time for an overhaul, getting it done right extends the life of your frame — which is the most expensive part of the bike to replace.

If your bike is due for a full going-over, our Overhaul Tune-Up ($275) includes headset and bottom bracket overhauls along with a complete teardown of every system on the bike. It’s the best value if you need multiple things addressed at once.
