Bike Brake Repair

Bike Brake Repair in Raleigh, NC

Your brakes are the single most important safety system on your bike. If they’re not working right, nothing else matters. Bell Lap Cycleworks handles every type of brake repair for riders across Raleigh, North Raleigh, and Wake County. Whether you’re dealing with squealing pads, a spongy lever, or brakes that just don’t stop you like they used to, we can help.

We work on all brake systems: rim brakes, mechanical disc brakes, and hydraulic disc brakes. Each type has its own quirks, its own wear patterns, and its own service needs. We’ve seen it all and know how to get your stopping power back to where it should be. Here’s a breakdown of our brake services and what to expect.

Our Brake Repair Services

Brake Adjustment — $10 per Brake

This is the most common brake fix we do. Over time, cables stretch, pads wear down, and your brakes start feeling loose or uneven. A brake adjustment brings everything back into spec: we set pad clearance, center the calipers, and tension the cables so both brakes engage smoothly. If your brakes are rubbing on one side or you’re pulling the lever all the way to the bar before anything happens, this is usually the fix. Takes about 10 minutes per brake. Hydraulic Brake Bleed — $40

Hydraulic disc brakes use fluid (mineral oil or DOT fluid, depending on the brand) to transfer force from your lever to the caliper. When air gets into the line, you get that spongy, inconsistent feel at the lever. A brake bleed removes the old fluid and any air bubbles, replacing everything with fresh fluid. The result is a firm, responsive lever with consistent stopping power. We bleed Shimano, SRAM, TRP, Magura, and other hydraulic systems. Learn more about hydraulic brake bleeds.

Brake Pad Installation — $25

Brake pads are a wear item. They get thinner every time you ride, and eventually they need to be replaced. If you’re hearing metal-on-metal grinding, seeing thin pad material, or your stopping power has dropped off even after an adjustment, it’s time for new pads. We install pads for rim brakes, mechanical disc brakes, and hydraulic disc brakes. We’ll also check your rotors or rims for wear while we’re at it. Parts are additional. Learn more about brake pad installation.

Brake Cable & Housing Replacement — $35

This applies to rim brakes and mechanical disc brakes. Over time, cables fray, corrode, and lose their smooth action. Housing gets kinked, compressed, or contaminated. The result is sluggish braking and poor modulation. We replace the full cable and housing run, cut and crimp everything to spec, and adjust the brakes so they feel like new. If your cables are more than a couple of years old or your braking feels stiff and unresponsive, this service makes a huge difference. Learn more about cable and housing replacement.

Common Brake Problems We Fix

Not sure what’s going on with your brakes? Here are the issues riders bring to us most often:

  • Squealing or screeching: Usually caused by contaminated pads, glazed rotors, or misalignment. We’ll diagnose the source and fix it.
  • Spongy or soft lever feel: Common with hydraulic brakes when air gets into the line. A bleed solves this.
  • Poor stopping power: Worn pads, contaminated pads, or stretched cables. We’ll figure out which one and get you stopping safely.
  • Brake rubbing: Pads dragging on the rotor or rim when you’re not braking. Usually an alignment or cable tension issue.
  • Lever pulls to the bar: Too much cable slack or worn-out pads. Quick fix once we identify the cause.
  • Contaminated pads: Oil, chain lube, or brake fluid on your pads kills stopping power. Pads usually need to be replaced and rotors cleaned or sanded.

If you’re experiencing any of these, bring your bike by either of our Raleigh locations. We’ll take a look and let you know exactly what’s going on before we do any work.

Brake Types We Service

We work on every brake system you’ll find on modern and vintage bikes:

  • Rim brakes (caliper, cantilever, V-brake): Found on road bikes, older mountain bikes, and commuters. Simple and reliable, but cables and pads need regular attention.
  • Mechanical disc brakes: Use cables to actuate a caliper that clamps a rotor. Common on gravel bikes, entry-level mountain bikes, and some road bikes. Need cable adjustments and pad replacements over time.
  • Hydraulic disc brakes: Use fluid-filled lines for powerful, consistent braking. Found on higher-end road, gravel, and mountain bikes. Require periodic bleeds and pad replacements, but offer the best stopping performance.

No matter what you ride, we’ve got the tools, fluids, and experience to keep your brakes dialed. We stock pads for most common setups and can order specialty parts quickly.

Why Brake Service Matters

We get it, brake service isn’t the exciting part of owning a bike. But it’s the one area where you really don’t want to cut corners. Worn or poorly adjusted brakes mean longer stopping distances, unpredictable handling, and real safety risk, especially in traffic or on fast descents. A $10 brake adjustment or a $15 pad swap is cheap insurance.

We recommend checking your brakes at least once a season, more often if you’re riding in wet or muddy conditions. If you’re coming in for a tune-up, brake inspection is already part of every package. And if your bike needs more than just brakes, check out our full list of repair services.
