Brake Pad Installation

Brake Pad Installation — $25

Brake pads are a wear item — they’re designed to sacrifice themselves so your rotors and rims don’t have to. Every time you squeeze the lever, you’re grinding off a tiny bit of pad material. Eventually there’s not enough left to stop you safely, and that’s when it’s time for new pads. At Bell Lap Cycleworks, brake pad installation is $25 per brake, plus the cost of the pads themselves.

We install brake pads for every type of bicycle brake system: rim brakes, mechanical disc brakes, and hydraulic disc brakes. We stock pads for most common setups and can order specialty pads quickly if we don’t have yours on the shelf.

What’s Included

Every brake pad installation at Bell Lap includes more than just swapping pads:

  • Old pad removal and inspection: We pull the worn pads and check for uneven wear patterns. Uneven wear can indicate caliper misalignment or a sticking piston — problems we’ll flag before they cause more issues.
  • Rotor or rim surface check: Worn pads can score rotors or leave deposits on rim brake surfaces. We inspect the braking surface and clean it as needed. If a rotor is badly scored or warped, we’ll let you know.
  • New pad installation: We install your new pads with correct orientation and seating. Disc brake pads need to be properly bedded in; rim brake pads need correct toe-in to prevent squealing.
  • Caliper alignment: After installing new pads, we realign the caliper so the pads sit centered over the rotor or rim. This prevents rubbing and ensures even contact on both sides.
  • Lever feel test: We check lever engagement and modulation after the install. New pads change the bite point, so we make sure everything feels right before you leave.

Signs Your Brake Pads Need Replacing

Brake pads don’t fail suddenly — they wear gradually. Here’s how to tell when yours are due:

  • Metal-on-metal grinding: If you hear a harsh metallic scraping when you brake, the pad material is gone and the backing plate is contacting the rotor or rim. Stop riding and replace immediately — this damages rotors fast.
  • Reduced stopping power: Brakes feel weak even after a brake adjustment. Thin pads simply can’t generate enough friction.
  • Visual inspection: For disc brakes, look through the caliper — if the pad material is thinner than 1mm, it’s time. For rim brakes, the wear indicator grooves in the pad surface should still be visible. If they’re gone, the pads are done.
  • Squealing that won’t go away: Some squealing is normal, but persistent noise that doesn’t resolve with cleaning or adjustment often means glazed or contaminated pads that need to be replaced.
  • Lever pulls further than usual: As pads thin out, the lever has to travel further before making contact. If you’ve already had the cables adjusted and the lever is still pulling far, new pads are the answer.

Pad Types We Install

Disc Brake Pads

Disc brake pads come in two main compounds, and the right choice depends on how and where you ride:

  • Organic (resin) pads: Quieter, easier on rotors, and offer good modulation. Best for road riding, commuting, and lighter trail use. They wear faster, especially in wet conditions.
  • Metallic (sintered) pads: More durable, better heat dissipation, and stronger bite in wet or muddy conditions. Louder and harder on rotors, but last significantly longer. Preferred for mountain biking and heavy use.
  • Semi-metallic pads: A middle ground between organic and sintered. Good all-around performers that balance noise, wear life, and stopping power.

Not sure which compound is right for you? Tell us what you ride and where, and we’ll recommend the best option.

Rim Brake Pads

Rim brake pads vary by brake type and rim material:

  • Standard rubber pads: For aluminum rims with caliper, cantilever, or V-brakes. Available in cartridge-style (replaceable inserts) or one-piece designs.
  • Carbon-specific pads: If you ride carbon rims, you need pads formulated for the braking surface. Standard rubber pads will damage carbon rims and provide poor stopping power. We stock cork and carbon-specific compounds.

Contaminated Pads

One of the most common reasons for pad replacement isn’t wear — it’s contamination. Chain lube, brake fluid, degreaser, or even finger oils can soak into pad material and destroy stopping power. Contaminated pads feel grabby, noisy, or just weak no matter what you do.

If your pads are contaminated, replacement is usually the only real fix. We’ll also clean or sand the rotor to remove any residue so the new pads don’t get contaminated immediately. If you recently had a hydraulic brake bleed and fluid dripped on the pads, bring them in — we’ll get you sorted out.

Related Brake Services

Pad replacement often goes hand-in-hand with other brake work:

  • Brake Adjustment — $15/brake: We realign the caliper as part of a pad install, but if your brakes also need cable tensioning, that’s a separate adjustment.
  • Hydraulic Brake Bleed — $40: If your lever still feels spongy after new pads, air in the line is likely the issue.
  • Brake Cable & Housing Replacement — $40: Old cables paired with new pads still won’t feel great. If your cables are frayed or corroded, replacing them at the same time makes sense.
