Derailleur Adjustment
Derailleur Adjustment — $15 per derailleur
Slow shifts, hesitation when you click the lever, a chain that rattles in certain gears, or shifting that won’t quite land where you want it — these are the classic signs your derailleurs need adjusting. At Bell Lap Cycleworks, a derailleur adjustment is $15 per derailleur and restores the crisp, instant shifting your drivetrain is supposed to deliver.
Indexing drifts over time. New cables stretch in their first few rides, housing compresses, and limit screws creep out of position. None of it means anything is broken — it just means your derailleurs are due for a tune. It’s one of the quickest, most affordable fixes we do, and it makes a dramatic difference in how your bike rides.
What’s Included
A derailleur adjustment at Bell Lap is a complete re-tune of your shifting, not a quick barrel-adjuster twist:
- Indexing: We dial in cable tension so every click of the shifter moves the chain exactly one cog — no hesitation, no overshooting, no half-shifts that rattle.
- Limit screw setting: We set the high and low limit screws so the chain can reach the largest and smallest cogs without overshifting into the spokes or dropping off the cassette.
- B-tension adjustment: We set the gap between the upper pulley and the cassette for your specific cog sizes, which keeps shifting sharp across the whole range.
- Front derailleur trim: On 2x setups, we adjust the front derailleur height, angle, and limits to eliminate chain rub and dropped chains.
- Hanger check: A bent hanger mimics bad indexing, so we verify the hanger is straight before we chase a shifting problem. If it’s bent, we’ll flag a derailleur hanger adjustment — no amount of indexing fixes a bent hanger.
- Full shift test: We run up and down the entire cassette under load to confirm clean, quiet, accurate shifting in every gear before the bike goes back to you.
Signs Your Derailleur Needs Adjusting
- Slow or hesitant shifting: You click the lever and the chain takes a beat — or several — to move. Usually cable tension that’s drifted out of index.
- Chain rattle in certain gears: A persistent ticking or rattling that only shows up in specific cogs means the derailleur isn’t lined up with the cassette.
- Won’t reach the biggest or smallest cog: If you can’t get into your easiest climbing gear or your fastest gear, the limit screws or cable tension need attention.
- Front chain rub: The chain scrapes the front derailleur cage in certain gear combinations — a trim or front derailleur adjustment fixes it.
- New cables that have stretched: Fresh shift cables almost always need a follow-up adjustment after the first few rides as they settle in.
Mechanical and Electronic Drivetrains
We adjust both. Cable-actuated drivetrains — Shimano, SRAM, Campagnolo — get a full mechanical re-index. Electronic groupsets like Shimano Di2 and SRAM AXS get a micro-adjust through the system’s own tuning mode, plus a limit and B-tension check. If your electronic shifting feels half a cog off, that’s a quick fix and we have the tools and apps to dial it in.
Front, Rear, or Both
Derailleur adjustment is priced per derailleur — $15 for the rear, $15 for the front. Most riders only need the rear dialed in, but if you’re running a 2x setup with front shifting problems too, a full front-and-rear tune is $30. Not sure which you need? Bring the bike by and we’ll tell you exactly what’s going on at no charge.
Related Drivetrain Services
Shifting problems sometimes need more than an adjustment:
- Derailleur Hanger Adjustment — $30: If the hanger is bent, it has to be straightened before indexing will hold. This is the most common hidden cause of shifting that won’t stay tuned.
- Shift Cable & Housing Replacement — $40: If your cables are old, frayed, or corroded, fresh cables and housing restore shifting far better than re-indexing tired ones.
- Chain & Cassette Service: A worn chain or cassette causes skipping that no adjustment can fix. We check chain wear as part of every adjustment.

Pricing
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| Derailleur Adjustment (per derailleur) | $15 |
| Front & Rear Adjustment | $30 |
| Replacement Cables/Housing (if needed) | From $40 |
Price is labor only. Replacement cables, housing, or drivetrain parts are additional if your shifting problem turns out to be wear rather than adjustment — we’ll always show you the issue and quote it before doing anything.
