Rear Hub Bearing Service — $30
The rear hub is the most mechanically complex component on your wheel. It carries your weight, transfers every watt of pedaling power to the road, and houses the freehub mechanism that lets you coast. Inside, there are typically two to four sets of bearings — hub shell bearings that support the axle, plus freehub bearings that keep the cassette spinning true. All of them are subject to load, contamination, and wear. A rear hub bearing service at Bell Lap Cycleworks is $30 and addresses every bearing in the system.
This service is priced the same as a front hub overhaul ($30), though there’s significantly more going on inside a rear hub. The freehub body has to come off, the drive-side bearings are under heavier load, and the engagement mechanism (pawls, ratchet ring, or star ratchet) needs inspection and lubrication. It’s a more involved job, and cutting corners on it leads to premature wear or a failed engagement that leaves you spinning the pedals with no drive.
What’s Included
A complete rear hub bearing service covers the full hub assembly — shell bearings, freehub bearings, and engagement mechanism:
- Cassette and freehub removal: We pull the cassette using a lockring tool and chain whip, then remove the freehub body from the hub shell. This exposes the freehub bearings and the engagement mechanism underneath — parts that never get attention on a bike that’s just been “lubed and tuned.”
- Axle disassembly: The axle comes out with its cone nuts (cup-and-cone) or end caps (cartridge bearing). We note the order and orientation of all spacers, seals, and washers — getting the stack height wrong on reassembly creates play or binding.
- Bearing cleaning and inspection: Every bearing in the hub gets cleaned and assessed. On cup-and-cone hubs, we degrease the loose balls and inspect the races for pitting. On sealed bearing hubs, we spin-test each cartridge bearing for roughness or play. The drive-side bearings wear faster because they carry more of the radial and axial load — we pay extra attention there.
- Freehub mechanism service: The engagement system — whether it’s spring-loaded pawls (Shimano, DT Swiss 18t), a star ratchet (DT Swiss 36t/54t), or a roller clutch (Shimano micro spline) — gets cleaned, inspected, and relubricated with the correct grease or oil. Pawl springs get checked for fatigue. Ratchet rings get cleaned and lightly greased. This is what keeps the “buzz” crisp and the engagement instant.
- Hub shell and freehub body cleaning: The interior surfaces of the hub shell and freehub body are degreased and cleaned. We check for wear on the freehub spline interface where the cassette sits — aluminum freehub bodies can develop gouges from steel cassette cogs over time.
- Fresh grease and reassembly: All bearings get repacked with quality waterproof grease. The freehub mechanism gets the correct lubricant — some require grease, others require light oil, and using the wrong one changes engagement feel or causes slipping. Everything is reassembled in the correct order with proper preload.
- Play check and spin test: The wheel goes back on the bike. We verify zero lateral play at the rim, smooth free rotation in both directions, and instant engagement when you pedal forward after coasting.
Signs Your Rear Hub Needs Service
Rear hub problems show up in ways that can be confusing if you don’t know what to listen for. Here’s what we see most often:
- Grinding when coasting: A dry, gritty sound from the rear wheel when you stop pedaling. This is usually contaminated hub shell bearings — water and road grit have gotten past the seals and mixed with the grease.
- Loss of engagement (ghost pedaling): You pedal forward and the cranks spin without driving the wheel — the freehub engagement isn’t catching. This happens when pawl springs weaken, the grease inside the freehub body has dried out or gotten too thick (especially in cold weather), or the engagement surfaces are worn. This one needs immediate attention because it can leave you unable to pedal.
- Change in freehub sound: Every rear hub has a characteristic buzz or click when coasting. If the sound changes — gets louder, quieter, intermittent, or rough — the engagement mechanism needs service. A well-maintained DT Swiss ratchet has a crisp, consistent buzz. A neglected one sounds sloppy or inconsistent.
- Side-to-side play at the rim: Grab the rear wheel at the rim and rock it laterally. Any movement relative to the frame means the bearings are worn or the axle preload needs adjustment. This is especially common on wheels that haven’t been serviced in a while.
- Rough rotation: Spin the rear wheel with the bike elevated. If it feels notchy, resistant, or decelerates quickly, the hub shell bearings are damaged or dry. Compare it to the front wheel — the rear should spin just as freely.
- Cassette wobble: If the cassette rocks slightly on the freehub body — visible as a slight side-to-side shimmy when the wheel spins — the freehub bearings may be worn. This can also cause shifting inconsistency under load because the cassette position shifts as you pedal.
Freehub Types We Service
The freehub is the component that allows you to coast — it engages when you pedal forward and freewheels when you stop. Different hub brands use different engagement systems, and each requires specific service procedures:
- Pawl-based (Shimano, most hubs): Three to six spring-loaded pawls click into a toothed ratchet ring. The classic system — reliable and serviceable. Pawl springs can weaken over time, and dried grease causes lazy engagement. Regular cleaning and lubrication keeps them snappy.
- Star ratchet (DT Swiss): Two toothed rings pressed together by a spring. Offers more points of engagement than pawl systems — 36-tooth (10°) or 54-tooth (6.67°) being the most common. The ratchet faces need to be clean and lightly greased; too much grease causes slow engagement in cold weather.
- Roller clutch (Shimano Micro Spline): Used on some newer Shimano hubs. Cylindrical rollers engage against a ramped surface. Nearly silent coasting and very fast engagement. Service involves cleaning and applying the correct Shimano-specified grease.
- Magnetic engagement (Chris King RingDrive): Chris King’s proprietary system uses a helical spline with two rings that interlock. Known for extremely fast engagement and longevity. Requires Chris King’s specific grease — we stock it for these services.
- Industry Nine Hydra: Uses 690 points of engagement for near-instant pedal response. Service involves cleaning the drive ring and applying I9’s recommended lubricant. These hubs are built for low maintenance but still benefit from periodic service.

Freehub Body Wear
One issue we see regularly on rear hubs is freehub body damage from cassette cog bite. When steel cassette cogs are tightened onto a softer aluminum freehub body, the cogs dig into the spline interface over time — especially under hard pedaling. Eventually, the gouges get deep enough that the cassette won’t slide off for service or replacement.
During every rear hub service, we inspect the freehub splines for this kind of damage. Minor gouging can be cleaned up with a file. If the freehub body is severely damaged, it can usually be replaced without replacing the entire hub — most quality hubs sell the freehub body as a separate part. We can also install a steel freehub body (available for many DT Swiss and other hubs) to prevent future damage if you’re running a steel cassette on an aluminum body.
