Overhaul Bike Tune-Up
Bike Overhaul Tune-Up in Raleigh — $275
Your bike has been through a lot. Maybe it’s seen two full seasons of group rides and race days. Maybe it’s been sitting in the garage since last fall and you’re not sure what’s going on inside those hubs. Maybe you just bought a used bike and want everything gone through before you start putting miles on it. Whatever the situation, Bell Lap Cycleworks’ Overhaul Tune-Up is the one that gets your bike back to where it should be — riding like it did the day you brought it home.
At $250, the Overhaul is our most thorough tune-up package. It’s a complete teardown and rebuild — every bearing surface serviced, every cable inspected, every bolt torqued to spec. We don’t cut corners, and we don’t rush it. This is the service for riders in Raleigh, North Raleigh, and the Triangle Area who want their bike done right.
What’s Included in the Overhaul
The Overhaul covers everything in our Basic ($75) and Standard ($150) packages, plus a full teardown of your bike’s major systems. Here’s what we do:
- Complete disassembly — every component comes off the frame
- Frame cleaning and inspection — we clean the entire frame inside and out, and check for cracks, dents, or damage you might not see
- Headset overhaul — bearings cleaned, inspected, repacked or replaced
- Bottom bracket overhaul — pulled, cleaned, inspected, and reinstalled with fresh grease
- Hub bearing service — front and rear hubs opened up, bearings cleaned and repacked
- Full drivetrain cleaning and adjustment — chain, cassette, chainrings, derailleurs all cleaned, assessed for wear, and adjusted
- Brake system overhaul — pads inspected, rotors cleaned (disc) or rims cleaned (rim), hydraulic bleed if applicable, cables and housing assessed
- Wheel truing — both wheels checked and trued
- Cable and housing assessment — replaced if worn (included in the service)
- Full reassembly — everything goes back on with proper torque specs and fresh grease where it matters
- Comprehensive safety check and test ride — we ride it before you do
If we find anything that needs replacing — a worn chain, shot brake pads, a cracked housing — we’ll let you know before we install anything. Parts are additional, and there are never surprises on the bill.
Who Needs an Overhaul?
The Overhaul isn’t something every bike needs every year. Here’s when it makes sense:
- Hard riding for 1-2+ years without major service. If you’ve been putting in serious miles — road, gravel, mountain — and haven’t had the bearings touched, it’s time. Grit and moisture work their way into headsets, bottom brackets, and hubs over time, and the damage gets worse the longer you wait.
- Bikes pulled out of storage. Sitting isn’t great for bikes. Grease dries out, cables stiffen, and seals can deteriorate. If your bike has been in the garage, shed, or basement for a season or more, the Overhaul gets everything cleaned out and properly lubricated again.
- Race bikes needing an off-season refresh. End of race season is the perfect time for a full teardown. Start your next season with everything dialed — fresh bearings, clean drivetrain, confident brakes.
- Bikes with multiple issues. If you’re dealing with a creaky bottom bracket AND sluggish shifting AND brakes that don’t feel right, the Overhaul addresses everything at once instead of chasing individual problems.
- Used bikes. Just picked up a bike secondhand? You don’t know its service history. The Overhaul lets us go through everything so you know exactly what you’re riding.
How the Overhaul Compares
We offer three tune-up tiers because not every bike needs the same level of work:
- Basic Tune-Up — $95 — Adjustment-focused. Brakes, derailleurs, tire check, chain lube, safety inspection. Good for bikes that are riding fine but need a quick once-over.
- Standard Tune-Up — $175 — Goes deeper. Includes cable and housing replacement, wheel truing, drivetrain cleaning, and headset adjustment. The right call for bikes ridden regularly over 6-12 months.
- Overhaul Tune-Up — $275 — The full teardown and rebuild. Every bearing surface serviced, frame inspected, complete reassembly. This is the “make it like new” option.
Not sure which one you need? Give us a call or bring your bike by. We’ll take a look and tell you honestly what level of service makes sense. We’re not going to push an Overhaul if a Basic will get you where you need to be.
What to Expect — Turnaround and Process
Because the Overhaul involves a complete disassembly and rebuild, it takes a bit longer than our other tune-ups. Plan on 3-5 business days depending on what we find during the teardown and whether any parts need to be ordered. We’ll keep you updated if anything comes up.
Here’s how it works:
- Drop-off — Bring your bike to either our Creedmoor Road or Lafayette Village location in Raleigh. We’ll do a quick intake and talk through any specific issues you’ve noticed.
- Teardown and inspection — We disassemble the bike, clean the frame, and inspect every component. If anything needs replacement, we’ll call you with options and pricing before we go ahead.
- Service and rebuild — Bearings are serviced, drivetrain cleaned and adjusted, brakes overhauled, wheels trued, and everything reassembled to spec.
- Test ride and pickup — We ride it to make sure everything is dialed, then give you a call. When you pick up, we’ll walk you through what we did and flag anything to keep an eye on.
If your bike also needs specific repairs — a wheel build, new crankset, derailleur replacement — we can handle those at the same time. And if you’re interested in a custom build or want to upgrade components while the bike is apart, that’s a great time to do it.
