Bottom Bracket Overhaul
Bottom Bracket Overhaul — $40
The bottom bracket is the bearing assembly at the center of your frame where the cranks spin. It’s the hardest-working bearing on the bike — it takes your full pedaling force on every stroke, and it sits in the lowest point of the frame where water, dirt, and road spray collect. When a bottom bracket goes bad, you know it. Creaking, clicking, grinding, or play in the cranks — all signs that the bearings need attention. At Bell Lap Cycleworks, a bottom bracket overhaul is $40 and eliminates those symptoms by servicing or replacing the bearings entirely.
This is a full teardown service — we pull the cranks, remove the bottom bracket, clean the BB shell, inspect everything, and reassemble with fresh grease or new bearings. It’s the most thorough fix for bottom bracket noise and the only way to properly address contamination and wear.
What’s Included
Every bottom bracket overhaul at Bell Lap is a complete, detailed service:
- Crank removal: We pull the crank arms to access the bottom bracket. This requires specific tools depending on your crank type — we have extractors and tools for Shimano Hollowtech II, SRAM DUB, GXP, BB30, PF30, square taper, and other standards.
- Bottom bracket removal: We extract the entire bottom bracket unit from the frame’s BB shell. Threaded BBs unscrew; press-fit BBs require careful extraction with the right tools to avoid damaging the frame.
- BB shell cleaning: The inside of the BB shell gets thoroughly cleaned and inspected. We check the threads (on threaded frames) for damage and the bore (on press-fit frames) for scoring or ovalization.
- Bearing inspection: We spin the bearings by hand and check for roughness, play, and corrosion. Cartridge bearings that feel gritty or rough get replaced. Loose-ball systems get inspected for pitting and wear.
- Regrease and reassembly: Everything goes back together with fresh waterproof grease on all contact surfaces, threads, and bearing seats. Proper greasing prevents corrosion, reduces noise, and ensures smooth removal next time.
- Torque to spec: We tighten the bottom bracket and crank bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque values. Over-tightening damages bearings; under-tightening causes play and noise.
- Spin and creak test: After reassembly, we spin the cranks to verify smooth rotation and test under load to confirm the creak or noise is gone.
Signs Your Bottom Bracket Needs Service
Bottom bracket problems are some of the most annoying issues on a bike because the noise and feel are hard to ignore. Here’s what to watch for:
- Creaking in time with pedaling: The classic BB symptom. A rhythmic creak, click, or groan that matches your pedal cadence — once per crank revolution. It often gets louder under hard effort and may disappear when you coast.
- Clicking under load: A sharp click when you stand up to pedal, sprint, or push hard on climbs. The bearings or BB interface is shifting slightly under the increased force.
- Grinding feel through the pedals: A roughness or vibration you can feel through the pedals or cranks, especially at lower cadences. The bearing surfaces are worn or contaminated.
- Play in the cranks: Grab one crank arm and try to rock it side to side. Any lateral movement means the bearings are worn or the BB is loose in the frame. This will get worse quickly and should be addressed soon.
- Wet riding conditions: If you ride through rain, puddles, or on wet roads regularly, water gets into the BB faster than anywhere else on the bike. Raleigh’s humid climate and occasional downpours accelerate BB wear.
- High mileage: If you’ve put in a season or two of regular riding without servicing the bottom bracket, the grease has likely broken down even if it still feels okay. Preventive overhaul is cheaper than replacing a damaged BB shell.
Bottom Bracket Types
Bottom brackets come in more varieties than any other component on the bike. We service all of them:
- Threaded (BSA/English): The traditional standard. Cups thread into the frame’s BB shell. Found on most steel, aluminum, and many carbon frames. The most straightforward to service and the most reliable long-term.
- Press-fit (BB30, PF30, BB86, BB92): Bearings or cups press directly into an unthreaded BB shell. Common on carbon frames to allow larger-diameter bottom bracket shells. More prone to creaking due to fit tolerance issues, but a proper overhaul with the right tools eliminates the noise.
- SRAM DUB: SRAM’s universal bottom bracket system that works with threaded and press-fit frames using adapter cups. Uses a single spindle diameter across all SRAM cranksets.
- Shimano Hollowtech II: External bearing cups that thread into a BSA shell. The industry standard for Shimano road and mountain cranksets.
- Square taper and octalink: Older standards found on vintage bikes, commuters, and some entry-level bikes. Still perfectly serviceable — we have the tools for these too.
Not sure what type you have? Don’t worry — we’ll identify it when the bike comes in.
Press-Fit Bottom Bracket Creak
Press-fit bottom brackets are notorious for creaking, and it’s not always the bearings. The fit between the BB cups and the frame shell can be slightly loose, allowing micro-movement that creates noise. During an overhaul on a press-fit system, we address this by cleaning the interfaces thoroughly and applying retaining compound or loctite where appropriate to create a solid, creak-free bond. If the frame’s BB shell has become ovalized from wear, we’ll let you know — threaded BB adapters are sometimes the best long-term solution.
Related Frame Services
Bottom bracket work is often part of a bigger service picture:
- Headset Overhaul — $30: The other major bearing system on the bike. If you’re servicing the BB, the headset is often due at the same time — both face the same environmental exposure.
- Headset Adjustment — $15: A quick headset check while the bike is on the stand is smart preventive care.
- Derailleur Hanger Adjustment — $30: If you’re addressing crankset and drivetrain issues, make sure the hanger is straight too.
- Crankset Installation — $30: If you’re upgrading or replacing the crankset, a BB overhaul at the same time ensures everything starts fresh.
If your bike needs a complete refresh, our Overhaul Tune-Up ($275) includes bottom bracket and headset overhauls along with a full teardown of every system. View all our frame services for the full list.

Silence the Creak
A creaky bottom bracket only gets worse. Use the booking buttons in the sidebar to schedule at either location, or stop by either of our Raleigh locations — Creedmoor Road or Lafayette Village. You can also reach us through our contact page. Most bottom bracket overhauls are completed within a day or two, and we’ll test ride the bike before you pick it up to make sure the noise is gone.
