Brake Adjustment
Brake Adjustment — $15 per Brake
A brake adjustment is the most common brake service we perform at Bell Lap Cycleworks — and usually the most cost-effective fix for brakes that aren’t performing the way they should. For $15 per brake, we’ll get your stopping power back to where it needs to be.
Brakes fall out of adjustment gradually. Cables stretch a little with every ride, pads wear down millimeter by millimeter, and calipers shift from vibration and use. You might not notice the change day to day, but eventually you’re pulling the lever further than you used to, or one side is rubbing while the other barely engages. That’s when a quick adjustment makes all the difference.
What’s Included
A brake adjustment at Bell Lap covers everything needed to bring your brakes back into spec:
- Cable tension: We set the correct tension so the lever engages at the right pull distance — not too loose, not too tight.
- Pad clearance: We set even clearance on both sides so the pads contact the rotor or rim surface evenly and simultaneously.
- Caliper alignment: We center the caliper so there’s no drag or rubbing when you’re not braking. This is especially important on disc brakes where even slight misalignment causes annoying rotor rub.
- Pad inspection: While we’re in there, we check your pad thickness and condition. If pads are worn past their limit or contaminated, we’ll let you know before you leave.
- Lever feel check: We test the lever action to make sure modulation is smooth and consistent across the full range of braking force.
The whole process takes about 10 minutes per brake. Most riders wait while we do it.
Signs You Need a Brake Adjustment
Not sure if your brakes need attention? Here’s what to look for:
- Lever pulls close to the bar before the brake engages — this usually means cable stretch or worn pads.
- One side rubs while the other has a gap — the caliper needs centering.
- Brakes feel uneven — front and rear don’t engage at the same lever position.
- Squealing or light rubbing when you’re coasting — pads may be dragging on the rotor or rim.
- You haven’t had them checked in a while — if it’s been more than a season, a quick adjustment is always a good idea.
These are all normal wear-and-use issues. Nothing’s broken — your brakes just need a tune.
Works on All Brake Types
We adjust every kind of brake system you’ll find on a bicycle:
- Rim brakes — caliper, cantilever, and V-brakes. Cable tension and pad toe-in are the main adjustments here.
- Mechanical disc brakes — cable-actuated calipers clamping a rotor. Cable stretch is the most common issue, followed by caliper alignment.
- Hydraulic disc brakes — caliper alignment and pad clearance. If the lever feels spongy, you may need a brake bleed instead of (or in addition to) an adjustment.
When an Adjustment Isn’t Enough
A brake adjustment fixes alignment and tension issues, but sometimes the problem goes deeper. If we find any of the following during your adjustment, we’ll let you know what’s needed:
- Worn brake pads: If pads are past their wear indicators, no amount of adjustment will restore stopping power. We can install new pads for $15 (parts additional).
- Frayed or corroded cables: Old cables lose their smooth action and can fail without warning. A full cable and housing replacement is $40.
- Spongy hydraulic lever: Air in the line means you need a hydraulic brake bleed ($40) to get that firm, responsive feel back.
- Warped rotor: A bent rotor will rub no matter how well the caliper is aligned. We can true the rotor or recommend replacement.
We never do extra work without talking to you first. If an adjustment is all you need, that’s all we’ll do.
